music in youth ministry 1 Year, 2 Months ago
Why is there such an emphasis on music in youth ministry? what is the greatest means to diciple?is it not the word? also not all youth are into music and clicks form with those who can play instraments and those who dont, creating more of a divide than anything else. yes we must worship god! but a balance of decipleship must be maintained and one must be able to reach all youth not just those into music. what are your thoughts on this?

Music has always been one of the biggist pull factors for youth. Most of them can identify with it and find them selves in it. Those who can play instruments are always seen as "cool" because they are able to do what many teens dream of doing. Most teens want to be in a band or become rock stars... I don't think that this is necessarily a bad thing though, I think that there are many Christian bands out there that have great songs with excellent Biblical lyrics and this can be used as a tool to reach many youth. However like you said some teens are not so into the music scene and so we need to be able to reach them too. I think that this is why it is so important as youth pastors or youth workers or even parents of youth to have our ears to the ground and to meet the teens where they are at. If they are into skate boarding then we use that as a way to reach them, if they are into movies then we use that and so forth... Like Jesus we need to meet people where they are at and find a way in to reach them and then through relationship we can help them along the right path!

Yes that is it, meet the youth were they are at, and sadly people run youth "were I want them to be" as it will be easier to handle that way, the leaders comfort zone. I have no problem with music in youth ministry, just the over emphasis of it. As you mentioned youth seen playing instraments are seen as cool and therfore people will model themselves after them, so who is put up in the worship team, newcomers? experienced youth who have an awarness of being modelled after? are they trained in ministry to deal with youth coming to them? because they do and will continue to do so.Music is the "bait" the musicians are the fisherman as much as the youth pastor/worker, if we can do that ....just imagine the greater impact!

Hey All i use music in ministry but i don't put special emphasis on it i think that we should be careful not to seek many different ways to make youth more attractive we should preach Christ out of our own life experience.

Youth are influenced by their examples.i believe if we portray a true Christian life not just in word but in living example we will reach more.

People responded to Christ he two entered a world at a time of perversion where the people who God had saved from various adversities turned their back on him and knew him not.

Music in ministry is a great tool to be used in conjunction with a life after the will of God

ps: this is a great website idea

Music is a good tool to attract the youth but should not be base or corner stone of your ministry. Each area or region has different needs and interest. We have a responsibility to the youth and that is to disciple them ( to make them fishers of men).
